Throughout our 155-year history, New York Life has recognized the importance of serving our community as well as our customers. To honor that commitment, New York Life has established a volunteer program that is dedicated to improving the lives of the people around us.

"Volunteers for LIFE" is a network of employees, agents and retirees whose mission is to develop and promote local volunteer opportunities. Activities supported by Volunteers for LIFE are extremely diverse, accommodating a wide variety of interests, abilities, and levels of commitment.

Some of the projects undertaken by our volunteers include collecting food and winter coats for the homeless, staffing soup kitchens, and refurbishing local schools. There is a special emphasis on projects that fall within the New York Life Foundation's "Nurturing the Children" initiative, which helps underprivileged children learn and grow.

New York Life employees, agents and retirees are committed to improving the lives of children. They serve as tutors for literacy programs that expose children to the world of books and ideas, mentor youngsters through Big Brothers Big Sisters, and volunteer as classroom instructors for Junior Achievement.


"Helping others is a way of life with our company," said service associate Stephen McCormick, who along with other volunteers from the AARP Operations Center in Tampa, recently threw a costume party for mentally and physically challenged adults.

"I guess that's only natural, because if you think about it, that's really what people are doing when they buy life insurance - helping someone else. Maybe this is our way of doing just the same. And besides that, it's just plain fun!"

Over the years, our associates have found themselves answering certain questions much more frequently than others. To save you a step, we are providing a handy summary of these questions - along with the answers you would receive by calling our toll-free service number. (For your reference, you may want to keep this information with your other insurance records).

How do I change my beneficiary or personal information?
An address or telephone number can be updated over the phone. Other information such as birth dates and gender errors require a signed and dated statement listing the correct information. To change a beneficiary you may complete a Change of Beneficiary form, or just send us a signed and dated statement. (Forms are available through our website, or you can call the number listed below.)

How do I file a claim?
Our customer service representatives will help see you through this difficult time. Simply call the number below and we'll mail out a claims packet within 24 hours.

How can I check to see when my payment is due, or when the last was received?
Just call the service number below, or access your payment information on our website. For your security, you will need to have your insurance certificate number available in order to access your personal folder on the website or if you are calling after-hours and reach our 24-hour automated service line. Otherwise, our service associates will be happy to help during the regular business hours shown below.
 

Can I apply for more coverage?
Since all our plans have maximum coverage limits, it's best to call and let one of our service associates review your options. They will access how much insurance you already have, the type of plan(s) you own, and inquire as to any significant health changes since you last applied.

Can I receive a payment coupon book?
A payment book is not currently available, but we do offer an automatic premium payment plan that conveniently deducts premiums from your bank account. You can request a form on our website or by calling the service number below.

Beating Fatigue

Fatigue slows down your reflexes, breaks concentration, leads to errors, and makes it harder to handle stress. Here are some ways to reduce your fatigue.

  1. Exercise. Aerobic exercise makes your heart's output increase, so the blood carries more oxygen to meet the demand. You'll feel refreshed, physically and mentally.
     
  2. Eat regular, balanced meals. Your body will produce energy efficiently if fed good foods regularly. Choose lots of proteins, complex carbohydrates, and little fat. Get all the required vitamins and minerals.
     
  3. Reduce your sugar intake. Too much sugar saps energy. Smoking and alcohol can do the same.

  4. Manage your time. Fatigued people are often trying to do too much. Set realistic goals and plan projects accordingly.
     

  5. If you can't figure out why you're fatigued, see your doctor for an examination, blood work, or other appropriate tests.
     

  6. Ask your doctor if a food allergy, anemia, or a malfunctioning thyroid might be contributing to your tiredness.
     

  7. Improve your sleep. Remove any distractions. Sleep 7-9 hours. Go to bed at the same time each night. A good night's sleep is essential for you to function at your best.
     


You Want To Exercise, but how do you stay motivated?

First, choose an exercise you enjoy. If you hate lifting weights, try tennis. If running's boring, start swimming. To heighten your enjoyment, combine exercise with another activity you like. Watch a video on that exercise bike. Listen to a CD or cassette while you hike.

Don't do it alone. Find a workout partner. Make a commitment to exercise with someone, and you can keep each other accountable. Besides, you can socialize while you sweat. You can also tell your family and close friends about your exercise plan. They can provide encouragement.

Set an exercise goal that's challenging, but attainable within a few weeks. Once you reach that goal, set another. And, reward yourself each time you reach a milestone.

Finally, remind yourself how healthy exercise is. Even one of the world's easiest exercises, walking, lowers your risk of dying from or developing many illnesses including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Exercising also helps you sleep, think, and learn better. So, let's go exercise!



Insuring Your Spouse

An important consideration

Of course you want what's best for your family - that's why you made sure to buy a quality life insurance plan. But what about your spouse? Wouldn't your partner appreciate the same peace-of-mind that you now enjoy?
